Santiago High School Young Senators Transformative Youth Leadership

The Young Senators of Santiago High School are a group of students in the Garden Grove Unified School District that have taken up the task of becoming civically engaged. In the last two years, the Young Senators have connected other youth and community members around voting and local issues, formed relationships between local organizations and schools and have brought trainings for teachers and administrators on how to engage undocumented students. The Young Senators also led the efforts in Garden Grove to bring the national gun violence conversation locally by holding a rally and a moment of silence in their school. They have also been instrumental in our campaign to reach young voter, collectively we have contacted thousands of young voters in Orange County and registered and pre-registered over 2,000 new voters.

Previously in her personal practice as and now in her role as Directing Attorney of the Immigration Unit at the Public Law Center, Monica has been at the forefront to meet the needs of the immigrant community, particularly those detained. Last year when the City of Los Alamitos voted to defy Sanctuary and ultimately was ground zero for attacks against immigrants, Monica took to the council chambers and organized with her community to bring a strong, unifying force against anti-immigrant attacks. Her advocacy, along with others in OC, helped to launch a movement across the state to #DefendSanctuary
